Spurred by requests for a national celebration of physical therapy by the House of Delegates dating as far back as the mid-1960s, APTA and participating components began to celebrate Physical Therapy Week in the early 1980s. The week was initially observed in conjunction with APTA’s annual conference in June and was later moved to October. The week evolved and the first National Physical Therapy Month was celebrated October 1992 with the theme “Back Into Action With Physical Therapy.” The goal of the month remains to collaborate with components to engage with local communities and educate consumers about how physical therapy can help keep people active and fit, and age well.
