The Marquette Challenge was created in 1989 by physical therapy students at Marquette University as an annual student-led fundraiser to support physical therapy research through the Foundation for Physical Therapy. The idea was for physical therapy programs to compete against each other to raise money during each yearly campaign. The winning school earned the right to cohost the next year’s challenge with Marquette, adding its name to the challenge title. Runners-up also earned prizes, and every participating school was recognized. Fueled by the enthusiasm of PT and PTA students in programs throughout the country, the challenge grew over the years to include more honors, such as most successful newcomer and school with the biggest jump in donations from the previous year, and such inventive fundraising activities as an NCAA basketball bracket competition, continuing education workshops with featured lecturers, and even an ugly Christmas sweater sale. By the challenge’s 30th year of competition in 2019, more than $4 million had been raised by over 300 participating schools.
